2017 Resolutions

If there's one thing in the world I need to do, it is learn to be more accountable to myself. I'm terrible at this. I frequently set myself goals, even small ones (say, get up 10 minutes earlier) but fail completely at follow through. When I am accountable to somebody (client, boss, even my wife) - I'm great. I follow through, to an almost intense extent. But when it is just to myself, I don't put the effort I should to follow through with my goals - be they big or small. In an effort to improve this, I've decided to review my 2017 resolutions, see how I did, and set some resolutions for 2018. Here we go.

  • Make an effort to own less things. In the things I do buy, think about these three questions:
  1. Do I need this? Or if I don’t, have I wanted it for at least a month?
  2. Is this ethical? Is it good to the planet, to people who made it and to animals?
  3. Will I regret spending this money?

How I did: This…may not have been the best place to start. Unfortunately, I didn’t do terribly well with this one. I took steps towards ethical purchasing towards the end of the year, and I did do multiple clear outs, and continued with buying only cruelty free (vegan where possible) beauty/cosmetics. But I did buy a lot of stuff from old favourites – IKEA, Kmart, you name it. Cheap, yes! But not very ethical. This one is on the list for next year – it’s a long term project!

  • Think about food and eating in a different way, with the goal of:
  1. Spending less
  2. Reducing my fast food consumption by end 2017
  3. Eating (more) vegan

How I did: I did better on this one. We incorporated a lot more vegan food into our diets this year, and I have definitely reduced my fast food consumption. However, I haven’t spent less on food in 2017 so that’s one to really focus on in 2018.

  • Complete a 7 minute workout at least 4 times a week

How I did: Failed this one. Completely. One day, I will work out how to enjoy exercise. 2017 was not that year for me.

  • Drink at least 1 liter of water a day

How I did: I didn’t measure this one, but I can guess I got it around 90% of the time. You can always drink more water, so I’ll keep working on this.

  • Learn Spanish with Liz using Duolingo

How I did: This is another I failed completely. I’m not built for languages. I think I’m okay with that.

  • Read 30 books

How I did: This one I managed about 2/3 of. I think I read about 20 books – better than the year before (thanks, Audible), but still not where I’d like to be (I’d ideally like to read about 50 books a year). So I’m working on that again this year.

  • Go to Japan

How I did: Nailed this one. We went in September/October and it was spectacular.

  • Edit the film I have taken

How I did: I…did better on this that I have in previous years. I want to do better this year, but I did okay with this.

  • Pay off all personal debts

How I did: I got a personal loan and bought a camera. I did pretty terribly.

  • Read and watch more diverse media

How I did: This is hard to measure, but I think I definitely did “more” of this in 2017. It’s a constant effort, but I definitely consumed more media from a diverse range of creators and I’ll keep aiming for more of this in 2018.

BONUS: Start a Youtube channel

How I did: I actually did this one! There's not a lot on there yet, but I took the plunge.

Following on from this, I've composed the following list of resolutions for 2018.
